Repeatability and agreement of axial length measurements in silicone oil-filled eyes after vitrectomy from two optical biometers

To compare the axial length measurements in silicone oil-filled eyes from Pentacam AXL (OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH) and IOL Master 700 (Carl Zeiss Meditec) to evaluate the offset of Pentacam and develop a new measurement mode for silicone oil-filled eyes for Pentacam AXL.

Prospective study of pseudophakic silicone oil-filled eyes after vitrectomy. No exclusion criteria, 3 consecutive measurements per eye with both devices. Only measurements with a good quality of the respective parameter were included in the analysis. Mean difference and Bland-Altman analysis was used for the assessment of agreement. Repeatability was assessed with Coefficient of Variation (CV).
The measurements of 23 eyes (23 patients) were analyzed. Mean age (±SD) was 64.3±10.2 years. Mean axial length measured with Pentacam AXL was 25.78mm (n=23). Mean axial length using the mode for silicone oil-filled eyes with IOL Master 700 was 24.97mm (n=23). Mean difference (±SD) was 0.82±0.07mm. After the -0.82mm correction of Pentacam AXL axial length values, the difference between the devices was <0.1mm in 82.6 % of eyes. After the exclusion of 6 eyes with the difference of ≥0.10 mm between measurements, CV was 0.03% for IOL Master 700 and 0.05% for Pentacam AXL.
The axial length of silicone oil-filled eyes can be reliably measured with Pentacam AXL using the -0.82mm correction. The offset is being implemented into the Pentacam AXL Software as a new measurement mode for pseudophakic silicone oil-filled eyes.
