Abstract Details

To report the safety of modified phaco technique in hard posterior polar cataract.

DD Eye institute,Kota,Rajasthan,India

This prospective study comprised 25 eyes of 21 consecutive patient with hard posterior polar cataract. Study was done for a period of 24 month. Cataract surgery was performed by a single experienced surgeon using a modified technique of phacoemulsification. Central trench was made in the nucleus and nucleus divided in two half. Hydrodelination tried and the both the half nucleus divided with direct chop method and emulsified.

Out of 25 eyes,10 eye had grade 3 cataract and 15 eye had grade 4 cataract. All surgeries were performed using the modified phaco technique. Posterior capsule rupture occurred in only one eyes. The mean visual acuity improved significantly after surgery (p<0.001). The postoperative visual acuity was worse than 20/20 in 2 eyes. In all eyes PCIOL was implanted in the bag.

Hard Posterior polar cataracts can be safely extracted by this modified phaco technique with least complication. Visual acuity improved significantly in most cases.
