Evaluation of clinical and refractive outcomes of Capless SMILE Technique to correct the residual refractive error after ReLEx®Smile.

With Capless SMILE Technique a new intrastromal lenticule is prepared with the Visumax-Femtolaser (ZEISS) while taking advantage of the original SMILE incision and original SMILE interface. 8 consecutive eyes were treated with Capless SMILE to correct low degree of residual refractive error after ReLEx®Smile (range: -0,75 to -1,5 Diopter (D)). Mean spherical equivalent (SE) of refractive error was -1,1 D preoperatively. Outcome measurements include visual and refractive results.


No intraoperative complications occurred. All eyes were follow-up for at least 6 months postoperatively. Postoperative SE of refractive error was between +0,25 D in all cases at last follow-up. Postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was equal with preoperative best corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) in all cases. Night vision problems have not been reported postoperatively.


Capless SMILE Technique is a new effective intrastromal approach for the correction of residual error after ReLEx®Smile with excellent refractive and visual outcomes. With Capless SMILE the biomechanical advantages of SMILE are well preserved.
