Abstract Details


The study compares the corneal shape from multiple perspectives after Small Incision Lenticule Extraction and Laser-assisted Subepithelial Keratomileusis for mild to moderate myopia.

This prospective, comparative study included 62 eyes of 31 patients in the SMILE group, with a mean spherical equivalent (SE) of -4.12±0.86D; 56 eyes of 28 patients in the LASEK group, with a mean SE of -3.81±1.03. Visual acuity, refractive error, corneal Q value, corneal refractive power and corneal thicknes were recorded and analyzed pre- and 3 months post-operatively.


There was no significant difference in refractive error, corneal Q value, corneal refractive power and thickness before treatment. 3 months postoperative, Q value within 6mm (t=-2.686, p=0.009), the peripheral total corneal power (TCRP) (6mm: t=-2.395, p=0.020; 7mm: t=-2.856, p=0.006; 8mm: t=-2.928, p=0.005), sagittal corneal power (SAG) (7mm: t=-2.338, p=0.023; 8mm: t=-2.411, p=0.019) and surgery induced power change (∆K) were significantly lower in the SMILE than in the LASEK group. The peripheral Q value, central TCRP, SAG and ∆K, corneal thickness spatial profile, peripheral AD and central PTI was not significantly different between the two groups.


After SMILE, the corneal Q value change was smaller, the refractive power from central to periphery was more uniform and the corneal shape was smoother and more regular than after LASEK.
